Take The Peninsula Hong Kong, for example, where carefully blended notes of bergamot, green tea, jasmine, amber, musk, and native Hong Kong agarwood tell the story of the hotel's prestigious heritage. These scents appear in everything from lobby diffusers to the shower gels in guest rooms.

The goal? When you encounter that scent again, perhaps years later, you'll be instantly transported back to that luxurious Peninsula experience, triggering positive memories and, hopefully, booking another stay!

Restaurants Join the Game

Even restaurants, traditionally focused on taste rather than smell, are getting in on the action. Contemporary Chinese restaurant Chinesology created two take-home fragrances, "Ethereal Breeze" and "Luminous Petal", to transport diners to Tang dynasty China long after their meal ends.

The Hong Kong Museum of Art's current exhibition "Fragrance of Time" reminds us that fragrance has always been central to the city's identity. Artist Cherie Cheuk's installation "Gathering of Ten Fragrances" celebrates how aromatic plants have shaped local culture, from village-grown white champaca used in herbal teas to the incense that once dominated the harbor's trade.
